Self-awareness is one of the few leadership competencies that can have a tremendous impact on career success or failure and yet, it is the competency that most leaders are uncomfortable with. The idea of having a mirror held up that invites feedback (ie. criticism in most of our minds) is perhaps one of the most fearful components of growing in self-awareness.
Remember that feedback is but one way to enhance one's self awareness. Here are a few others:
- Know when strength might be played out
- Ask good questions
- Listen
Check out Chris Musselwhite's October 2007 Inc. article that provides further insight. I both refer and provide copies of this article in my self-awareness workshops.
