on connecting with your boss

I recently came across a blog post that gave several tips to the reader for “how to get along better with your boss”.  The “tips” included things like:

– Laugh at your boss’ jokes
– Share an embarrasing story and
– Ask them questions you know they want to answer

Seriously?

Having been in the trenches for a while, I had visions of some poor young millenial in the boss’ office with the “tip cloud” in his head – laugh at joke. check. share embarassing story. check.

Have boss think you’re odd and inauthentic. Check check.

It’s one thing to share an authentic belly laugh but I can gaurantee you, punching a checklist like a drone will get you nowhere.

Do you want the keys to a better relationship with your boss?

Start with this:

Be you. Do your job well.

Don’t get me wrong.  Good relationships are critical to long term success but those relationships begin with mutual respect not false actions. Which, by the way, will serve you well in every relationship, not just the one with your boss.

In the next post, I’m going to add one more to the list so stay tuned and…

Continue to be great!

I can’t believe someone actually posted those ideas. They are horrible. You’ve summarized the better traits perfectly: Be you and Do your job well. Building a real relationship built on mutual respect is the only way to go. Besides, your boss probably doesn’t want a ‘yes man or woman’. A good leaders knows that listening to diverse opinions is vital.
